Named after John Dewberry, one of the South's most polarizing and powerful real estate developers, The Dewberry Charleston is the result of an almost eight-year renovation of a former federal building. Designed to blend mid-century modern style with old-world Charleston charm, all of the property's 153 guest rooms and suites feature art by a local artist, chandeliers, queen- or king-sized beds dressed in Irish linens, flat-screen TVs and marble bathrooms with glass-enclosed showers. Recent visitors raved about the great service and well-appointed accommodations, although some bemoaned the lack of coffee makers and work desks, especially for the room rates. Should you need to conduct business while staying here, three event venues, including a ballroom and its adjacent pre-function space, are available. Fitness buffs, meanwhile, can work out in the fitness studio or borrow a bike for a ride around town. Once you've worked up an appetite, sit down for cocktails and a bite in The Living Room, where dishes are served in a living room-type setting with vintage and custom furnishings. Alternatively, head upstairs to the cheerful Citrus Club for oysters and drinks with church steeple views. Continue exploring the city with Dewberry's Volvo house car, whether heading for sights like The Battery and the Charleston City Market or out to dinner at night.
